Sunlight breaking through fog over a forest

Fear and joy cannot coexist.

A family carrying more debt than it can see the end of lives with a low hum of fear, and that hum costs more than interest. It shows up in marriages, in sleep, in the risks people don’t take and the conversations they don’t have. Take the fear out and better things become possible.

I’m Kent Kopen, and that belief is why DebtRetired exists.

No shame in not knowing

Who taught you how debt actually works? For most of us, nobody did. Not at home, not in school, and not at closing, where the numbers were disclosed but never assembled. A person can get an MBA from a top-25 school, graduate with honors, and be oblivious to this. I know, because the MBA on my wall didn’t teach it either.

And if you carry some scar tissue from borrowing, you’re in good company. I was in this industry through 2008 and 2009, and I remember how rough it was. Careful, hardworking families got hurt, and nearly all of us came out the other side with a lesson or a bruise. Nobody who lived through that era gets to feel superior about debt, and nobody here is going to make you feel small for yours.

Why this practice exists

I’ve spent 33 years in financial services, and most of that industry works one side of a household’s finances: what you own. Almost nobody works the other side with the same care: what you owe. Yet for most working families, the owe side quietly decides everything. It sets how much of each paycheck survives, how big the emergency fund can get, and whether net worth compounds or interest does.

DebtRetired exists to work that neglected side, honestly and in plain language. Debt and cash flow are the lane. Investments, insurance, taxes, and legal work stay with the professionals who do them well, and if you need one, I’ll introduce you to people I trust.

How I work

Before finance, I managed commercial construction projects, and that training never left: you don’t pour concrete without an accurate blueprint. I build payoff plans the same way. Your real numbers first, then the plan, then the work, with the plan adjusting as your life does. The rest of the background, for those who want it: an engineering degree from CU Boulder, an MBA from USC, years at Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley, and a coaching practice built on everything those years taught me about how families actually handle money.

But my job here is the guide’s job. This is your journey, your numbers, your date, your celebration. I’ve just walked the road enough times to know where it turns.

Twice a month I go live on YouTube for Office Hours. Bring your questions about debt and cash flow, or just listen in and hear how I think before you decide anything.

The bigger why

Too much debt is one of America’s biggest challenges right now, and I can’t fix that. What I can do is help one family at a time become less brittle: a real emergency fund, payments that stop draining, net worth that starts compounding. And here’s what keeps me at this. When parents get this right, their kids grow up watching money work differently. They start adulthood with different instincts, and their kids inherit those. One plan, worked faithfully, can change a family’s trajectory for generations.

That’s why the mission fits in six words: reduce fear, increase hope, realize potential.

RETIRED

Retire the right debt with a guide who stays. Then build wealth.

DebtRetired is a coaching and education practice. It is not a debt settlement, debt consolidation, debt relief, or credit repair service. It does not contact your creditors, does not pull your credit report, does not provide investment, tax, or legal advice, and never holds or handles client money. Steve and Amy are a composite household built from typical client situations. Their numbers come from a real run of professional planning software, and every date shown is a projection from that run, not a report of past results. Your numbers and your dates will be your own, and no outcome is guaranteed: a plan’s results depend on a household’s actual numbers and the follow-through behind them. Payoff modeling and client billing run on the Debt Done Date planning platform. Kent Kopen is a Certified Liability Advisor on that platform and is compensated through it. © 2026 DebtRetired.com
